ABORTION - IS IT IMMORAL?
- ABORTION AND ETHICAL ISSUE -
Question: "Does abortion have a negative effect on your karma? People often find abortion easier to accept if it is due to medical reasons or the pregnancy resulted from rape. Does our karma view it like that?"
"Psychic Advice":
Many people have strong feelings and opinions about abortion and ethical issues relating to it. Many of these beliefs come from what people are taught to believe, so the question they really have about abortion is: is it immoral? Before we address the karmic issues relating to abortion, we must first explore abortion and ethical issues, as well as morality, because our beliefs play a strong role with regard to our karma.
First, let us define our terms: ethical means morally correct. An ethic is a set or moral principles, especially ones relating to or affirming a specified group, field, or form of conduct. Moral means to be concerned with or adhering to the code of interpersonal behavior that is considered right or acceptable in a particular society. Personal morals are a person's standards of behavior or beliefs concerning what is and is not acceptable for them to do. Immoral means not conforming to accepted standards of morality. Morality is a particular system of values and principles of conduct, especially one held by a specified person or society. And finally, Karma, which is defined at the sum of a person's actions in this and previous states of existence, viewed as deciding their fate in future existences.
Abortion is often an ethical issue and a moral issue, but how you feel about it is what really determines the extent to which it becomes a karmic issue. Morals and ethics are based on societal beliefs, which become the only accepted form of behavior in that society - anything that goes outside of these doctrines is viewewd to be immoral or unethical. What is considered right and good in one society may not be the moral code adopted by another society. Forced abortions in China are part of that vast country's moral and ethical code, because their morals and ethics perceive overpopulation as being bad for their society, while population control through abortion is considered good. China currently has almost 20% of the world's population - from a global moral and ethical standpoint, population control may be necessary for the world's survival as a whole, however, other strong moral and ethical beliefs held worldwide limit the proliferation of birth control.
Some societies advocate a death penalty, or exact an eye for an eye. This can create karma, which is why executioners used to ask for forgiveness from the condemned. What is surprising is that those in a society who are against abortion are often pro death penalty and pro guns - if the argument against abortion is for the sanctity of life, then how can the taking of life be at all justified?
What is not right is for morals and ethics of a particular society to force someone to have an abortion - or force them not to have an abortion. Societal morals and ethics should not interfere with the Universal Law of Free Will, which allows for individual choice as long as it does not interfere with the Free Will of another. Some would argue that a fetus cannot exercise its Free Will, but indeed, it can. When a woman experiences indecision and inner arguments when faced with the choice of terminating a pregnancy or continuing with it, those are often inner conversations she is having with the soul that is connected to the fetus. When a decision to abort is agreed upon, it is reached by both parties. Likewise, the choice to continue with a pregnancy is also reached by both parties.
Western society holds societal beliefs and judgments about abortion, which are partly related to the beliefs about a woman's freedom to choose her life for herself (many societies today do not give women the power of choice on any issue - many women still have no freedom, and are considered the possession of men). When it comes to abortion and ethical issue, society seems to view abortion relating to medical reasons or rape as not being immoral - this is particularly true of rape, because rape itself is viewed as an immoral act.
There are many good reasons for abortion, not all of which are moral or ethical reasons. A woman must decide for herself what is true for her based on her personal morals. Personal morals are "a person's standards of behavior or beliefs concerning what is and is not acceptable for them to do". What is right for one person may not be right for another person, but that does not make either person wrong.
Which brings us finally to the issue of karma. Abortion only has a negative effect on your karma to the degree that it has a negative effect on your conscience. Karma is not punishment. Karma is not about divine judgment, it is about self-judgment - at the end of a lifetime, you are the one who judges yourself to determine what you learned and what you must learn in your next incarnation. Karma is not about divine retribution, it is about divine balance - you must experience all things in order to learn and know all things. It is through our experiences that we grow and evolve as a soul, and it is through karma that we develop compassion.
What you believe creates your emotions and attachments, and those are the factors that create your karma. If you believe your actions are good, and you have peace with those actions, then you do not create karmic ripples. If someone else responds to your actions believing they are bad, and has negative emotions about your actions, then you can experience a karmic bond with that soul that you must resolve through mutual forgiveness and release, either in this life or another.
We have sacred contracts and karmic bonds with other souls that determine who we incarnate with, and under what circumstances. We often have sacred contracts or karmic bonds with our parents, our siblings, our friends, our spouse, and especially with our children. Because we have Free Will, we can determine how, or even if, we carry out our sacred or karmic agreements. A fetus is a soul that also has Free Will, and that soul can choose to back out of incarnating, either through miscarriage or abortion. In some cases, the miscarriage or abortion itself was part of the sacred or karmic agreement between the mother and the fetus.
The key thing is to have compassion and forgiveness for yourself, and for the baby. An abortion is a death that often causes a woman to grieve the loss for a long time, usually in secret - this can be true even if she had many good reasons for abortion. In order to release karma, you must release guilt and sadness over the abortion - remember that the soul is eternal and you cannot kill a soul. Make peace with yourself and with the baby. If that soul is meant to be with you in this lifetime, it will find a way to do so - it will either come through you again or through someone else, and it will find its way into your life.
