MESSAGES FROM SPIRIT

QUESTION: "I feel I may be gifted. I get messages and feelings that I can't explain from houses, and people who have passed on. I have had many happenings to me - all visions from those who have passed. This gift scares me. I want to understand it and take more control of it. How do I do this? Does this sound real to you? Am I crazy? I honestly feel like a nut sometimes when this happens to me. Please help me to understand."

ANSWER: You are indeed gifted, this is very real, and you are certainly not crazy. You are able to see and hear beyond the veil between the physical world and the spiritual realm. This veil is like our sky: by day, we would perceive that this world is all that exists, yet by night, the illusion lifts and we see the reality that we are one among millions of planets and stars. We are constantly surrounded by spirits, guides, angels, and other beings that exist on different dimensions; some people like you are able to see, hear, feel and perceive them multi-dimensionally. Children are also often able to do this because they are open to perceive other levels of reality (although we call it their imagination) as they have not had their consciousness or beliefs about reality limited.

Places and objects hold energy. They hold energy of their own, as well as the energy that becomes imprinted on them from all they have experienced and have borne witness to. In essence, places and objects hold memories, and those memories can be accessed by people who are willing and able to see, feel and receive the energetic impressions from those places and objects. This psychic gift is called "psychometry", and it is what is often depicted on television or in movies where a psychic holds a photograph or a piece of jewelry to receive information. The more connected a person was to a place or thing, the more energy gets stored, which is why jewelry that is worn all the time is often the best for receiving psychic information (this is also because metal and gemstones are very responsive to energy).

Houses and other buildings soak up the energy of all that has occurred within them. The stronger the emotional experiences were, the more profoundly they become imprinted on the energy of the place. This is why it is good to do an energetic clearing of a new space that you move into, because the energy of all the past experiences can affect whoever is there in the present if that energy is not cleared. Spaces can be cleared with intention by holding the thought in your mind that you want to clear the energy of all that came before you, and that you now make the space yours, wiping the slate clean to begin anew. You can also clear energy by lighting white candles in each room, which purifies the space, or you can burn sage or incense to smudge the space.

Many people will get messages from their intuition about people, places and things. They may get an immediate sense of feeling comfortable or uncomfortable, or physical sensations of being warm or cold (the sudden feeling of a chill is often indicative of a spiritual presence). Most people ignore these feelings, but this is our intuition's way of speaking to us and guiding us, first and foremost to our safety, then to our wellbeing. Our intuition will ultimately guide us to our joy and bliss, if we listen, pay attention, and allow ourselves to trust and follow our own inner guidance and knowing.

Your level of intuition is extremely heightened to the point where you are aware of receiving messages and impressions from places and from departed spirits. Guides and spirits are constantly trying to give us messages, if only we would be willing to listen. Many of these spirits look for those who can see them, hear them and help them, or they may desire to help you. Departed spirits often wish to deliver a message to their loved ones so they can have peace and move on, but their loved ones may be unwilling or unable to hear them, so they seek out other people or other means of getting their attention. My own departed father speaks to me often, and I find great comfort in that. We never really lose anyone, we just have to be willing to see and hear them in a different way once they move onto the next dimension.

The psychic ability to connect with departed spirits is called "mediumship", or it is called "channeling" if the entities are from a higher plane or dimension. In my work, I channel information from divine beings, but I prefer not to work with departed spirits because they reside on a dimension that is called the "lower astral plane" (I only work with departed loved ones in special cases where this is necessary for healing, peace and completion). This plane is full of all kinds of energies, and can be dangerous (using the Ouija board accesses entities on this plane). One must work with strong boundaries of protection, and clearly invoke your intention when working with these spirits.

Ancient cultures would have guided someone who is gifted like you through many years of teaching and initiation to hone your gifts and teach you how to protect yourself. We lost this wisdom when, not so long ago, the "powers that be" were so frightened of these gifts and abilities that they condemned those who were so gifted to death. These are indeed gifts, and it is important that you learn how to direct them, and how to protect yourself in the process.

Protection is key when working with the unseen realms. The ability to feel energy from places and people is also called "clairsentience" or "empathy". People who are empaths are like psychic sponges, picking up on people's emotions all the time, wherever they go, often without realizing it. If you walk into a room and suddenly feel sad, or depressed, or afraid, etc., it may be because you are picking up on those emotions in that room. It is important for empathic people to learn to differentiate between what emotions are their own, and which emotions they have absorbed from other people or places. People who are empathic, particularly children, will have a tendency to gain weight as a protection from being so sensitive.

In order to protect yourself psychically, it is essential that you visualize a bubble of white light around yourself that completely surrounds you, including above you, below you, and behind you. You can make this light as bright and as thick as you would like. Visualize this light bubble as a shield around you when you wake up in the morning, and before you go to sleep at night. Also, at any time that you feel afraid, intimidated, or that you need more personal space, see this light around you and extend it out as far as you need to in order to feel comfortable and at ease.

I first learned to work with this bubble of light when I lived in New York City. The population is so dense in New York that people often bumped into me on the street, particularly during rush hour. When I started working with the white light around me, I always had my own space and no one touched me, even on a crowded subway. It really works, and it is an essential protection from other people's emotional energy, as well as from any unwanted spiritual energy.

It can also be helpful to make an affirmation that states: "I am willing to receive all that is for the highest and best good of all for me to know, and I am protected from all else." When you make this statement, you will no longer be picking up on everything from everywhere, and wondering if you are supposed to do something about it. This means that when you do receive a psychic message, it is important for you to pay attention to it and act on it. You can also ask that any messages be clear and gentle, and that they let you know exactly what you are meant to do with the information.

Working with psychic abilities and intuition improves with practice. The more you use your gifts and abilities, the better and stronger you will get in those areas - like practicing any sport or musical instrument. Your psychic ability is your instrument, and you can play with it to experience greater harmony in life. We are all born with psychic abilities to one degree or another, just as we can all throw a ball or draw a picture (no one is born with a ball or pencil in hand, but everyone is born with innate psychic abilities). With practice and intention, you can direct your psychic abilities to provide you with any information you choose, and to help others - and that is indeed a gift.
